Shine On: A Creative Space for Young Carers to Be Themselves

Young carers do an incredible job supporting their families, often taking on responsibilities well beyond their years. Shine On has been created to give children aged 7–12 (School Years 3–7) a chance to step away from those responsibilities and enjoy time just for them.

Running weekly on Friday evenings at the Civic Centre in Southend, Shine On is a free creative arts project using drama and puppetry to help young people build confidence, make friends and express themselves in a fun, supportive environment.

Led by experienced artists from Elevator Arts, the sessions are relaxed, playful and inclusive — no previous experience is needed. Through games, storytelling and creative activities, participants develop communication and social skills while exploring their imagination and having fun.

Shine On is also about connection. It brings together young carers with shared experiences, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and build a sense of belonging. Over the course of the project, children will work towards a gentle sharing or performance for family and friends, celebrating their creativity and achievements.

📅 Fridays, 5:00–6:30pm | 16 January – 27 March

📍 Civic Centre, Victoria Avenue, Southend-on-Sea

(No session during half-term week beginning 16 February)
